Golf Du Medoc
Classed among the top 15 golf courses in continental Europe, the third best golf course in France (from the Rolex Guide), the Golf du Medoc offers two superbly designed 18 hole courses.
The more challenging of the two is Les Chateaux, which is likened to a links course. It’s very long with large greens and lots of hazards all around. Les Vignes is set among the beautiful pine trees so accuracy is required to score well.
Les Châteaux certainly has a links design to it but is surrounded by forest land on the perimeter of the golf course. The greens are links style and massive with run-off areas, making the approach and short game very tough.
The course Les Vignes has a really nice variety of holes, some through parkland forest, some through big pines trees and some with links style. The greens are smaller than Les Chateaux and the course is a little shorter.
Medoc Golf Hotel is located just 35 minute’s drive from Bordeaux airport, which is accessible from several UK airports. Set in the heart of the Medoc Wine Country there are many vineyards you can visit from this excellent golfer’s base. Also within half an hour you can be in the centre of one of France’s finest cities, Bordeaux and the coastline is about 45-55 minutes only!
Golf de Moliets
This course was designed by American architect, Robert Trent Jones. For the last few years, Golf de Moliets has been included in Golf Digest Magazine’s top 100 golf courses in the world. It also ranks amongst the top ten in France, and is listed as one of the 25 most beautiful courses in Europe.
Moliets is 58km north of Biarritz and situated near the Atlantic coast at the southern point of Les Landes. It is a an hour and 40 minutes’ drive from Bordeaux and not far from the golf courses at Seignosse and Hossegor.
Grand Saint-Emilionnais Golf Club
A five-star golf course located near Saint-Emilion, designed by one of the best architects in the world, Tom Doak. This exceptional course unfolds in a valley fringed by centenary oak trees, framed by vineyards and located just 6 miles from the village of Saint-Emilion, offering stunning panoramic views from the club House.
Grand-Saint Emilionnais is located 15km east of the historic town of Saint Emilion, and 52km east of Bordeaux. It is set in a valley surrounded by oak trees and vineyards.
Golf de Seignosse
A beautiful and challenging course designed by American Robert von Hagge. Has been the course favoured by Jose Maria Olazabal to prepare for the Augusta Masters. Ranked 9th best course in France and 31st in Europe by the top 100 golf courses.
Designed by Arnaud Massy and John Morrison in 1927 this course was created amidst a pine and cork oak forest on sandy soil sheltered from the winds. With a typical British layout refined by Cabell Robinson, Hossegor is listed as one of the world’s top 1000 courses by Rolex Book, is host to national tournaments and welcomes visitors all year round.
Golf de Biarritz
Known as Le Phare it is the third oldest course in contenental Europe. Originally designed by Tom Dunn and then some years later modified by Harry Colt.
Despite its location Le Phare is more a parkland course with tree-lined fairways. Thus the challenge is to stay out of the trees and enjoy the views of the sea at various points on the course.
Golf de Neguri
This immaculately maintained course hosted the Spanish Open in 1968 and is the venue for important amateur championships. The course, par 72, is known for it’s contrasting design with the outward 9 holes exposed to the sea and the inward 9 holes played among the pine tress. With its wide fairways and large greens it is considered a must to play when visiting the area.
Neguri is a long course and has very open fairways. Whilst the greens are fast they are less bunkers around compared to other courses similar. Some of the holes sit up on the cliff tops with beautiful views of the sea.
